Pathogenic bacteria found in Aldi sausages
The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety has recently warned against a sausage marketed by Aldi Süd and some branches of Aldi Nord. In a product study, pathogenic Listeria monocytogenes bacteria triggered listeriosis, a serious disease. Sausage consumption is strongly discouraged. Now the recall has been extended.
This is the article "sausage with ham" in the 100 gram package of the manufacturer Franz Wiltmann GmbH & Co. KG. First, the recall was limited to the expiry date of March 8, 2019. Now, Aldi says to the South that all the products of this sausage with red ham, whatever the expiry date can be affected. In the interests of consumer protection, Aldi removed the article from the market.
Distribution Information
As Aldi Süd says, red ham sausage has been distributed throughout the Aldi Süd sales area. At Aldi Nord, only a few stores are affected by the recall. "The product concerned was exclusively traded in the companies Aldi Hannoversch Münden, Werl and Wittstock," wrote Aldi Nord in customer information.
Listeria bacteria can be dangerous
The presence of Listeria in foods can cause many ailments. For example, this can lead to flu-like symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Itching is also possible. In some cases, serious complications can lead to dangerous sequelae such as meningitis or blood poisoning. In particular, people with weakened immune systems are at risk for severe cases. These include, for example, the elderly, HIV patients, alcoholics and diabetics.
Pregnant women are particularly at risk
Nearly half of listeriosis cases involve pregnant women because the immune system changes during pregnancy and becomes more susceptible to the bacteria. Listeria can also be pbaded on to the unborn child, leading in the worst case to premature birth or stillbirth.
Listeriosis is notifiable
Listeriosis is one of the notifiable diseases in Germany. Anyone who has consumed the affected product and subsequently experiences the symptoms described here or if there is general discomfort should immediately seek medical attention and report any listeriosis. Since the pathogen remains in the intestine for weeks after the disease, special sanitation facilities are recommended to prevent further spread. (Vb)
