Listeria bacteria can be dangerous

The presence of Listeria in foods can cause many ailments. For example, this can lead to flu-like symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Itching is also possible. In some cases, serious complications can lead to dangerous sequelae such as meningitis or blood poisoning. In particular, people with weakened immune systems are at risk for severe cases. These include, for example, the elderly, HIV patients, alcoholics and diabetics.

Pregnant women are particularly at risk

Nearly half of listeriosis cases involve pregnant women because the immune system changes during pregnancy and becomes more susceptible to the bacteria. Listeria can also be pbaded on to the unborn child, leading in the worst case to premature birth or stillbirth.

Listeriosis is notifiable

Listeriosis is one of the notifiable diseases in Germany. Anyone who has consumed the affected product and subsequently experiences the symptoms described here or general discomfort should seek medical attention immediately and report possible listeriosis. Since the pathogen remains in the intestine for weeks after the disease, special sanitation facilities are recommended to prevent further spread. (Vb)
