Are not omega-3 fatty acids good for the heart?

Omega-3 fatty acids are considered beneficial to health. They should protect against heart attacks and vascular diseases. However, a meta-study by the Cochrane Foundation raises doubts about the application of these features. Long-term studies with more than 110,000 participants revealed no significant protective effect of unsaturated fatty acids on cardiovascular disease. Alpha-linolenic acid only seems useful for cardiac arrhythmias

The study focuses on omega-3 preparations

Omega-3 fatty acids are found mainly in fish fat, but also in nuts and rapeseed. Unsaturated fatty acids are essential and therefore vital. Omega-3 fatty acids are considered healthy. They are designed to slow down macular degeneration, prevent narrowing of the brain and reduce blood lipids and blood pressure.

Researchers at the Cochrane Foundation studied the cardio-protective effects of omega-3 fatty acids in a metastatic study. They badyzed 27 long-term studies with about 112,000 participants, in which the effects of three omega-3 fatty acids were studied. Specifically, it included eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), as well as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), found mainly in nuts and seeds.

No benefit for heart health

In each study A group of participants took omega-3 supplements for at least a year. One control group each received a placebo preparation. The result of the meta-study was that omega-3 fatty acids from fish had virtually no effect on the risk of cardiovascular disease. Taking the medication has not reduced the incidence of heart attacks or other heart diseases or strokes.

Similarly, results from plant-based alpha-linolenic acid have failed to find a positive effect on heart health. Only against cardiac arrhythmias seem to protect omega-3 fatty acids to a small extent. With herbal supplements, the risk dropped from 3.3% to 2.6%.

Omega-3 fatty acids overrated?

The results of the Researchers suggest that omega-3 fatty acids are vital but there is no reason to put fatty acids on top of what's needed, as this brings little or no benefit to the health – at least with regard to the health of the heart.
