While Boeing is working on the new market center, Airbus is attacking the market targeted by the airman. In the future, probably with a new variant of the A330 Neo.
In fact, Airbus recently increased the maximum take-off weight of the A330 Neo. For the delivery of the first jet to Tap Air Portugal, the manufacturer has provided the technical data of A330-900: 7200 nautical miles in the variant of 251 tons and 6550 nautical miles in the variant of 242 tons. Even with the smaller A330-800, there are two configurations for maximum takeoff weight (MTOW). But Airbus also has a plan that goes in the opposite direction.
Crawford Hamilton, head of the A330 Neo Marketing at Airbus, told the Bloomberg news agency that he was also considering offering a lighter version of the plane. This should therefore have a maximum take-off weight of only 200 tonnes. In addition, the thrust of the Rolls-Royce engines could increase from 72,000 pounds to 68,000 pounds, which would reduce fuel consumption.
Attack from above and from below
With such a lighter variant, Airbus could position itself against the so-called New Middle of the Market Aircraft or NMA, on which Boeing is currently working. It is not yet known if the plane, called Boeing 797, will be built. In 2019, the American aircraft manufacturer wants to make a decision and, if the answer is yes, put the new aircraft in 2025 on the market.
Airbus targets variants of the A321, from the direction of small aircraft to the center of the market. With a lighter A330 Neo, the European manufacturer could now put downward pressure on Boeing with a bigger plane, which would also be suitable for shorter distances.
