Augsburg: Defused aerial bomb: Residents can return to apartments – Local (Augsburg)

Relief among the thousand inhabitants who were not allowed to enter their apartments for hours: the Herrenbachstraße aerial bomb is defused.

With the discovery of an aerial bomb in the Herrenbachstraße on Saturday began a large-scale operation, which was affected by more than one thousand residents. Construction workers had discovered the American stun of the Second World War. With the 225-kilo bomb exposed and the heat threatened, defusing was scheduled for the same day.

Evacuation and disarmament continued until late in the evening. At 23:45 there was the good news: the air bomb could be destroyed.

Thousands of residents had to leave their homes

Previously, police evacuated a 300-meter radius for several hours. About a thousand residents were affected. The family garden and a house of Arbeiterwohlfahrt for badisted living had to be evacuated.

Police called on local residents to leave their homes on their own and stay with friends or relatives. The forces also fled the buildings and rang the bell. Mayor Kurt Gribl and Regulatory Officer Dirk Wurm were on hand to speak with local residents.

Several hundred people were accommodated in the three temporary shelters. These included the Martinipark temporary theater, the BRK site on Berliner Allee and the DLRG building at Friedberger Straße.

A total of 450 working groups were on site. These also redirected the traffic. Thus, the bus lines 33 and 36 were discontinued for several hours

At about 11 pm, the demolition expert was able to start defusing. With the defusing against 23:45 there was some relief among the residents. It meant that they could return home.

The action also had an effect on the festival of street artists La Strada: The fireworks on the Town Hall Square were canceled on Saturday. It has been said by the police, the population should not be disturbed by explosions.

Christmas bombing bomb for the state of emergency in Augsburg

Duds of the Second World War lie again and again in Augsburg. At Christmas 2016, about 54,000 people had to leave their apartment in Augsburg, as a 1.8-ton aerial bomb had to be defused in the city center. It was the second largest evacuation of a city in the history of the German post-war period.
