Augsburg: Major fire destroys Caritas social center in Göggingen – Local (Augsburg)

A large contingent of firefighters fight Sunday night against a fire in the Caritas building in Göggingen. The damage is huge. But people will not be harmed.

A major fire destroyed the Caritas social center on Depotstrbade street in Augsburg-Göggingen on Sunday night. According to the police, the fire seized the building and many vehicles. Since this is a purely commercial object, it is not badumed that people have been inside, said a spokesman for the operations center in the evening.

Shortly after 21, according to the police, the first emergency calls were received. Quickly more than 100 callers who had discovered the fire reported. According to a representative of the local police, a vehicle next to the social center apparently started to burn. The flames then spread to the building.

70 firefighters were on duty. In addition to the professional firefighters, Pfersee, Inningen-Göggingen and the fire brigades of Premium Aerotec and THW were on site. At 11:30 pm, the forces controlled the flames. The work of extinguishment, however, continued all night.

Augsburg Mayor Kurt Gribl (CSU) and Ordnungsreferent Dirk Wurm (SPD) carried out a photo of the work of extinction. The area around the social center has been closed. The column of smoke could be seen at night throughout the city of Augsburg.

According to the first results, the damage is enormous. "The back side of the Caritas building is probably beyond the savings," said spokesman of the fire department Friedhelm Bechtel, threatening to break the heavy photovoltaic system through the burning ceiling. The fire department is focused on safeguarding the front part of the administration. Meanwhile, firefighters had to keep their distance because it was too hot.

Terror in Caritas after a major fire in Göggingen

Diocesan Caritas Director Domkapitular Andreas Magg was horrified in a first reaction. "We are all shocked, and what is burning right now was an Augsburg solidarity center where so many good things have been done for so many people."

The building was moved in 2010. Among other things, it housed the clothing store, a food counter, the used furniture market, various consulting and administration rooms and the Werthmanns Café. More than 30 women and men reportedly lost their jobs in one fell swoop, Caritas spokesman Bernd Gattner was stunned. "We have to take stock on Monday and see what happens next."
