Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer (CSU) did not appear before the Bundestag's internal committee despite opposition demands in particular. An appearance is also not expected later, the commission said shortly after the start of Wednesday's meeting. A request for a formal summons from Seehofer to the committee did not find a majority.
The Greens, the Left and the FDP had asked for information on the circumstances of the dismissal of President Hans-Georg Maaßen, the President in charge of the protection of the Constitution. Seehofer had put Maaßen on temporary retirement on Monday.
Originally, it was a Maaßens speech to employees of the International Secret Service, in which he had accused parts of the SPD of radical Leftist tendencies and had described himself as criticism of a "foreign and security policy of naive and foreign left".
