Aachen –
Günther Schuh has a mission – he wants to help electric mobility at a breakthrough. About seven years ago, the professor of Aachen invented the street scooter, the battery-powered and emission-free carrier with which Deutsche Post delivers its parcels. Schuh is also managing director of the E-Go Mobile AG electric car company. The company has developed what large companies have largely missed in recent years: a cheap and mbad-produced electric car.
On Friday, the first E-Go production hall was inaugurated in Aachen. "It's the second best day of my life after my marriage," Schuh said. The scientist founded the company on the RWTH campus just three years ago. The start-up wants to produce electric vehicles for short-distance traffic at low cost. The first baby now hears the name "Life" and will come in three performance clbades on the market. The city car will go into mbad production this fall, the first models will be delivered by the end of the year. As a first step, 10,000 vehicles will be built each year in the 16,000 square meter hall with a second capacity change in about a year. "It's a great gift for Aachen," said Aachen Mayor Marcel Philipp (CDU).
E-Go wants to use in his four works, to be created by 2022, about 2000 employees. In addition to the factory 1, the factory 2 is already under construction, from which the body of the city car will be produced from the autumn. The launch of Plant 3, where will be built the electric minibus "Mover", is scheduled for August 2018. It took 55 years before a prime minister from North Rhine-Westphalia could again open a production plant. At that time, it was an Opel factory in Bochum, this time it is a factory in Aachen. "It's a special day for electromobility in Germany," said Armin Laschet (CDU). The Prime Minister has called Schuh into the state government's electronic mobility council. The country needs more men with this pioneering spirit, says Laschet. The country has financed the factory 1 with about 2.6 million euros, the total investment is 25.7 million euros. The property development company Trierwer Triwo erected the building and then rented it to E-Go.
Günther Schuh has accelerated the pace, there is currently no time to lose, he says. Even the flagship factory was developed and created almost at the "Chinese speed". "Our concept is unique, we produce a solid, high quality and affordable car here." In 17 hours, such a vehicle is created. Costs are minimized by using, for example, the shelves of existing component suppliers. An expensive paint line is not necessary because for the outer skin of the city, sturdy thermoplastic materials are used, which also tolerate a parking hump, says the shoe. The new Industry Park 4.0 has an added benefit: in just a few months, model improvements can be implemented here. "We want to create something for the change of mobility," says Schuh.
A clean plant was born east of Aachen. A few years ago, cathode ray tubes were manufactured in the old Philipshalle. Now here is screwed in the future. All energy needed for production is obtained through panels on the roof of the factory.
There are more than 3,000 pre-orders for "life", the least new car owners ever seen.
Prime Minister Armin Laschet is one of the first clients to be put on hold.
