Stuttgart (Dpa) – The car manufacturer Daimler wants to build two additional battery factories at the sites of Sindelfingen and Untertürkheim. As the company announced Wednesday in Stuttgart, construction work is expected to begin in the next decade. In addition to battery production planned in the Brühl plant, the Untertürkheim plant must also receive a factory in the Hedelfingen plant; this would quadruple the capacity initially planned on the site. Both plants are said to cost tens of millions of dollars, she says.
Including the two factories announced now, Daimler's battery production would increase to eight plants worldwide. In Kamenz, Saxony, battery production has been ongoing since 2012 and a second plant is under construction. In addition, Daimler and the Chinese manufacturer BAIC are building a local battery production plant in Beijing. A battery factory is also planned for the Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa (USA) and Bangkok
"We are working hard to implement our electrical offensive and expand our global battery production network", said Markus. Shepherd. "With battery production in Sindelfingen and Untertürkheim, we bring cutting-edge technologies to our factories." The expansion underscores the rapid and necessary transformation towards electromobility.
The electric car market is growing rapidly – and with it the need for batteries. Just two weeks ago, the Chinese group CATL announced that it would be one of the largest battery cell factories in Europe in Thuringia. From here 2022, 240 million euros will be invested. Customers already exist – that is how BMW wants to buy CATL battery cells worth four billion euros.
