Driving Report: BMW X4: If Less Is More

[ad_1]

The new BMW X4 follows the typical rule of the coupe, which forces customers to spend more money on fewer cars, but in return receives more aesthetics and exclusivity. A bit of utility comes to add to that.

After only four years, BMW is rearranging its mid-size SUV coupe. In fact, it had taken a long time for Bayern to build the predecessor X3, the most exclusive coupe, since 2010. In the era of the SUV boom, you do not want to wait so long today and come around a year after X3 debut with the X4 partner in the corner. Incidentally, in this case, Coupé means four doors at the same time, so the value of utility is preserved – but a different design and a clearly sloping roofline at the rear express sporting differences. The now even greater independence of BMW is obviously important. According to the engine, Bavarian prices vary between 49,700 and 70,900 euros (135 kW / 185 hp to 260 kW / 354 hp) and rank with the X4 according to the constellation between 2,200 and 5,100 euros on the bread variant and butter X3. However, the X4 still rolls in the line "Advantage" better equipped, whose armor has a variable steering ratio, for example

For the first outings, BMW brought both xDrive30i versions at the base price of 56300 euros and M40d (70.900 euros). All wheel drive is tuned to all versions – on typical balancing equipment such as mechanical differential locks or a shorter reduction is naturally omitted in this segment. Despite the considerable power of 185 kW / 252 hp, the 30i is the four-cylinder two-liter already used. In terms of performance, it does not take away anything. The elegantly designed motor grader accelerates throttle control with emphasis and confidence, constantly sporting pace at the day. The factory promised 6.3 seconds to the speed of the road, you remove it completely. If the promise of consumption (7.3 liters per 100 kilometers on average) is also respected, it remains to show. But it is also clear that the four cylinder remains acoustically identifiable, although it functions properly and that it is sufficiently silent. Those who want six pots, unfortunately, have to resort to the expensive variant M.

There is a first sample of it as a diesel version. The average of 6.6 liters per 100 kilometers, namely a ratio between performance (240 kW / 326 hp) and fuel consumption have. That the six-cylinder three-liter is really wild, crystallized from the first meters. After minimal startup weakness, the M40d starts. When nearly 700 Nm fall on the powertrain, we are delighted with mandatory four-wheel drive. And despite the heavy trend with the heavy diesel on the front axle, the Bayer on the winding country road a good figure. It is a layer to sweep, seems light. The four-wheel steering helps and has the advantage of a smaller turning radius in the city. To support the winding ambitions with the accelerated approach, strengthen acousticians in sport mode, the engine sound, but fortunately not falsify it with an artificial V8 roar, as some competitors handle it. After all, the M40d has a clbadic six-cylinder in line, and that should look like that.

Inside, the pbadenger can expect style seats in a sporty style – even at the base. Thus, good conditions are created to be a little more dynamic on the road, which seems to be the case for X4 customers. At the stop, it should in no case fail. Well-designed instruments of the current generation provide information on speed and speed – it remains with mechanical indicator hands and a partial area designed as a screen. However, the group of full – screen instruments is running, as shown by the next generation of eight, but the solution in X4 is by no means unappealing. And, of course, the level of infotainment is pretty good – the latest generation of course has a large touch screen which, due to complex features, must always be cleaned for a while before the new connoisseur knows all the menu levels. For the colorful and detailed head-up display will be charged 980 euros extra.

Those who hear about X4 prices are, in principle, an elegant long-haul vehicle with a well-balanced suspension, which offers a good compromise between comfortable interpretation and sporting values (especially with the costly adaptive solution of 600 euros). The fact that the rear of the SUV four-door coupe can embark a little harder because of the roof line, potential customers overcome, especially since the pbadengers in the second row will not complain of the lack of space for the legs. Only in the trunk volume (1,430 liters maximum), the X4 is considerably limited and offers 170 liters less than his brother X3. Fortunately, the customer can decide for himself if less car is worth a bit more.
