The new traces do not belong to any of the eight suspects arrested, said Bernd Belle, deputy chief of the judicial police in Freiburg. Two other traces of DNA could however have been attributed to arrested suspects.

An 18-year-old student was allegedly raped after several men visited the disco. The suspects are seven Syrians aged 19 to 29 and a 25-year-old German. There was a warrant for one of the men at the time of the offense for another offense, but it was not executed.

According to the police, the young woman was helpless because of a substance added to her clubbing drink. Traces, interrogations and secret measures discovered on the victim led the investigators to arrest the eight men. These were already known to the authorities for other crimes, it was said. Most of them lived in refugee camps in and around Freiburg.

Outrage for un-executed arrest warrant

The unfulfilled mandate now brings Baden-Württemberg's Minister of the Interior, Thomas Strobl (CDU), to Erklärungsnot. Hans-Ulrich Rülke, leader of the FDP parliamentary group, asked for explanations as to why the 10 October arrest warrant had not been executed. The serious badual badault occurred on the night of October 14.

Even the SPD parliamentary group vice president, Sascha Binder, said: "The people have the right to know why the arrest warrant has not been executed". The Minister of the Interior had to speak at the next meeting of the House Committee. The Home Office feels wronged.

Freiburg, who is considered leftist, had already made headlines after the murder of a student about two years ago. A young refugee was arrested and sentenced in March. Crime as well as other crimes in the region sparked a debate on German refugee policy.
