Palestinian extremists in the Gaza Strip have announced the end of their rocket attacks against Israel. The ceasefire should be implemented immediately and intervened through Egyptian mediation, a spokesman for the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group said.
The group will stick to it if Israel does the same thing, he said. Saturday night, the violence had decreased; There have been no other reports of launching Palestinian rockets or Israeli air strikes in Gaza.
More than 30 missiles have been fired from Israel since the coast, after four Palestinians were killed by Israeli soldiers during violent demonstrations at the border. A fifth Palestinian died Saturday from his injuries. In response to rocket attacks, the Israeli Air Force bombed more than 80 targets in the coastal strip during the night, the army said.
The violence had fueled the anxiety of a new war. The military wings of several Palestinian factions, including Hamas, in power in the Gaza Strip, declared themselves ready for war on Friday in a joint statement. Egypt has been trying for months to arrange a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Army spokesman Jonathan Conricus accused Islamic Jihad of acting on instruction from Syria and Iran's Revolutionary Guards. Israel's response will be "non-geographic", he said, apparently as a warning to Syrian and Iranian forces. Islamic Jihad is a smaller militant group in the Gaza Strip. Conricus, however, stressed that Hamas, who ruled in the Palestinian region, was responsible for "everything that comes from Gaza".
Every week since March, Palestinians on the border with Israel have been demonstrating against the blockade of the Gaza Strip and calling for the return of occupied areas. According to Palestinian data, 213 residents of the Palestinian area have been killed so far. An Israeli soldier was shot dead by a Palestinian sniper. Israel accuses the protesters of violating the border and attacking soldiers.
