The Guangzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention awarded a reward for catching Triatomin bugs. The center is working to prevent an outbreak of Chagas disease by detecting early cases.

Chagas disease has a period of incubation between 20 and 30 years. It's "a new disease like AIDS," said the center.

"The measure is designed to provide patients with early detection and better treatment in the coming months," said the center in a statement posted on its WeChat account Thursday.

Those who deliver Triatomin bugs to the center – dead or alive – will receive a reward of eight yuan ($ 1.33) per copy, it was said.

Chagas disease usually causes flu-like symptoms such as fever, swelling of the face, body aches and nausea. However, 20 to 30% of infected people may become chronically ill. Symptoms include inflammation of the heart muscle, enlargement of the esophagus and large intestine, blood clots and even sudden death. The pathogen can remain inactive in the human body for decades.

A center official said that no case of Chagas disease had been reported in Guangzhou. However, the city is ready for a review of Chagas disease in Guangdong Province.

Triatomine bugs mainly sucked blood from the faces of their victims. Often, they have left their excrement in the wound. The affected areas are especially around the eyes and lips, where the skin is thinner, said the center in his opinion. An adult insect is usually about 2.5 inches long.

The virus is a vector of the disease, which kills thousands of people each year in Central and South America. With increasing globalization, cases of the disease in North America, Europe, Oceania and Japan have been reported in recent years, the announcement said.

"There is currently no vaccine to prevent Chagas disease, which can cure the disease after reaching the late stage," the opinion says.
