Interface: PCIe Gen6 doubles the data rate

The group special interest PCI-SIG (Peripheral Component Interconnection) announced that by 2021, the specifications of PCIe Gen6 should be known. Consortium representatives said this at the annual PCI-GIS Developers Conference 2019 developer conference. With PCIe Gen6, the bit rate doubled to 64 GT / s or 8 GB / s per channel.

Unlike the move from PCIe Gen3 (2010) to PCIe Gen4 (2017), PCIe Gen5 (May 2019) was completed much faster, PCI-SIG following the same plan for PCIe Gen6. In about five years, the data transfer rate per channel would have quadrupled, as the speed of PCIe Gen4 PCIe Gen5 cards to PCIe Gen6 will increase from 2 to 8 GB / s. Again, the standard is backward compatible with older PCIe or M.2 cards.

The novelty of PCIe Gen6 is PAM4, a pulse amplitude modulation with four states instead of two (00/01/10/11) for the line code. For this reason, the data rate is doubled compared to PCIe Gen5, which is based on ZRN (non-return to zero) with half the number of bits. PAM4 as a modulation method is not new, it is used in the network area for 200/400 Gbit Ethernet networks and corresponding Broadcom controllers, among others.

For the moment, however, PCIe Gen4 is in its current state: in the server support, the Power9 of IBM for years, now, AMD has with the Radeon Instinct MI60 a professional graphics card adapted. On July 7, 2019, also appear the Radeon RX 5700 alias Navi and the Ryzen 3000 alias Matisse, and the X570 chip for the AM4 socket. This platform supports PCIe Gen4; Adata, Corsair, Crucial, Galax, Gigabyte, Patriot, PNY and the first Team Group SSDs are scheduled for 2019.
