Like a polo shirt for the Pampas – the new Volkswagen T-Cross
Volkswagen pushes its global SUV offensive with the T-Cross. The small SUV is rather something for city dwellers.
Wolfsburg.
It took a long time, but finally, finally, VW found a response to the boom of the small SUV and introduced the spring against Renault Captur & Co., the new T-Cross in position. As a Polo for the Pampa, it should make a contribution to the fact that the share of SUVs in VW sales is soon 50% – which also increases sales. Because with a base price of 17 975 euros, the T-Cross is about 700 euros above the Polo engine identical.
In the fight against the order book, VW focuses mainly on domestic values. In addition to the already elevated sitting position, the variability is important: the front pbadenger seat can be adjusted flat as standard and the rear seat can be moved 14 cm for an additional charge. With 4.11 meters long and 2.56 meters wheelbase, two adults can ride at least briefly to the rear, or the T-Cross with 385 or 455 to 1281 liters of cargo volume for a evolution of the Polo variant.
Even the twelve centimeters longer but much more athletic, T-Roc, he holds almost nothing. Longer and stronger than polo
As surprising as is the meaning of everyday life, it is however the fashion consciousness, the VW at this time of day. Because even if the Polo is not exciting, it causes the T-Cross of unusual colors. Colorful rims, twelve shades of lacquer in the fan, contrasted finishes and eye-catching adhesive tattoos should make him an eye-catcher, said design chief Klaus Bischoff.
It was also a little more daring than the Polo: the T-Cross is five inches longer and is stronger than the Polo, has a grid that blends with the headlights, as well as catchy taillights connected to a red reflective tape . Inside, the joy of colors continues. On the digital badpit on demand, conspicuous consoles are surrounded by the large touch screen, cheeky seat covers and colorful seams.
The small all-terrain vehicle is colorful, refreshing and suitable for everyday use. So you have few surprises while driving. The axles, steering and powertrains are identical to those of the Polo. The T-Cross is therefore felt at the first release with the prototypes quite definitive: good child, adult and a little boring. At least with current engines that range from three-cylinder with 1.0 liter displacement and 95 or 115 hp four-cylinder with 1.5 liter and 150 hp and, initially, only a 1.6 liter diesel with 150 hp .
New products also at Touareg and Tiguan
There are later based on customer and CO requirements2Specifications may still be a variant on natural gas and possibly a GTI, but one option will not offer Lower Saxony: the four-wheel drive. As the first Wolfsburg SUV, the T-Cross needs to hear with front-wheel drive. "This is not expected on the A0 platform and would not have been possible in the price range," says head of badembly, Andreas Krüger, who believes that this does not constitute not a disadvantage.
For all-wheel drive, most competitors are missing, such as the very popular Renault Captur, the Peugeot 2008 and the Seat Arona. In addition, the SUV adventure of this type is almost always played in the city, where roads are paved and unobstructed in winter.
Shortly before the creation of the T-Cross, the new Touareg, which was tested in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains for off-road capability and has been approved, has arrived on the market. From 60,000 euros, the customer receives a noble SUV, which can be well controlled by an additional off-road package, even off the beaten track. Thanks to the full steering, the five-meter vessel can easily be guided in tight turns, the air suspension moves the bumps away and lets the VW float, so to speak.
SUV, wherever you look
Even a river crossing is possible thanks to the air suspension, because it can lift the SUV by seven centimeters. However, the water in the river bed should not exceed 25 centimeters! The two current three-liter diesel V6 variants (170 kW / 231 hp or 210 kW / 286 hp) are certified according to the new standard and are therefore not affected by impending driving bans.
Meanwhile, the Tiguan is a true versatile. In the new all-terrain variant, the compact SUV features a specially designed front fascia with increased slope angle, underrun protection and all-wheel drive with off-road driving programs. Exterior features include blackened chrome trim, black exterior mirror caps, and 18-inch wheels. The market launch consists solely of a 110 kW / 150 hp 2.0-liter diesel engine combined with a dual-clutch transmission and AWD technology. Prices start at 40,925 euros. Other variants of training are to follow.
SUV, wherever you look. VW says this segment will double its registration numbers in ten years. According to the Brand Manager, Ralf Brandstätter, VW sells one in five SUVs in Europe, one in four. The development is not over yet: "By 2025, we expect every new VW in the world to be an SUV," Brandstätter said.
So already plays the I.D.Cross, the compact SUV with electric motor, which is planned for 2022. For T-Cross engineers, the hybrid and electro variants were not a problem. It would be a small car still too expensive.
