The Chancellor had admitted in the SZ interview disputes with the French president. It reacts directly.
French President Emmanuel Macron defended his concept of "fruitful confrontation" with Germany. "We must be able to accept momentary differences of opinion, without being completely unanimous (…)," said Macron Wednesday night in Paris. "I believe in the successful confrontation, that is to say that you propose to test the partner (…)". In the end, you reach a compromise.
The attitude of Macron is not new, the 41-year-old had already agreed in late April disagreements between Germany and France on certain issues. As an example, he had led the UK EU exit.
Macron responded to the climate initiative he and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte launched earlier this week at the extraordinary EU summit. "We have managed to bring together nine (EU) Member States." Two days ago, Germany joined the group.
Macron answered a question at the press conference on the interview of Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) with the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Merkel invoked her good relationship with Macron, despite obvious differences: "There are differences in mentality between us and differences in the understanding of roles." Nevertheless, Germany and France have agreed "broadly, of course" and would always compromise, said Merkel.
