Maryland Trockenfrucht Vertriebs GmbH recalls several articles containing sunflower seeds offered by Real and Rewe. Salmonella was detected during controls. It is therefore not excluded that harmful germs appear in other articles. Initially, only Real was affected by the recall. REWE now recalls sunflower seeds all over the country. Consumption is strongly discouraged.

Real are the sunflower seeds of the brand "real quality". The affected products were offered in 500 and 1000 gram packages and carry the expiry date of May 2020. At Rewe, sunflower seeds were offered under the name "Maryland Sunflower Seeds". The size of the packaging and the expiry date of the items concerned are the same as those of Real.

At routine checks, salmonella was discovered

"Salmonellae were detected during routine control of a single bag," Maryland writes in an information document for Rewe 's customers. For this reason, health problems due to consumption could not be excluded. The product concerned would be immediately removed from the sale. Anyone who has already purchased the products concerned can return them to the market. The purchase price will be refunded.

How to recognize a Salmonella infection?

The Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety also warns its portal "lebensmittelwarnung.de" before consumption of products. Salmonella are pathogenic bacteria. They can cause sudden diarrhea, headache, abdominal pain, fever, general malaise, nausea and vomiting. The symptoms may persist for several days. The first symptoms appear six to 72 hours after consumption.

What is the danger of salmonella?

As reported by the Federal Health Education Center, Salmonella infection can in rare cases lead to a serious progression of the disease. This can lead to complications such as blood poisoning (sepsis) and a very high fever. In the worst case, life-threatening circulatory collapse or kidney failure may occur. In very rare cases, Salmonella poisoning ends fatally. Infants, toddlers, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. (Vb)
