New York (dpa) – According to a newspaper article, tens of thousands of documents containing sensitive data from major automakers have been posted on the Internet temporarily.
The 157-gigabyte data leak was discovered this month by a security researcher and hit heavyweights such as Volkswagen, Toyota, General Motors, Ford, Fiat Chrysler and Tesla, the New York Times wrote in his online edition.
The data concern technical information on production processes – sometimes closely monitored trade secrets. Contracts, work schedules and even confidentiality obligations have also been included. In total, this involves nearly 47,000 cases from more than 100 companies, which would have had to do with the Canadian small company Level One Robotics and Controls.
According to the report, it is unclear whether unauthorized persons have seen or downloaded information that also contains personal data such as scanned driver's licenses and pbadports. The researcher, who discovered the data on a backup server, informed the companies last week. Then the material was removed from the network. Level One and the car manufacturers concerned did not want to comment on the newspaper or leave the requests unanswered.
