Shortly before this year's World Cup, on May 14, Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Senzow went on a hunger strike to protest his release and that of all political prisoners in Russia. His state of health is therefore threatening.
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) urged Russia to provide medical care in Senzow. Senzow must be immediately taken to the hospital and his state of health accordingly, the Strasbourg court said Wednesday. The ECtHR encouraged the Ukrainian to stop his hunger strike and to accept medical aid. On Tuesday, his lawyer turned to the European Court of Human Rights for his client to receive the necessary care, the court said.
The Ukraine was sentenced to 20 years in prison in August 2015 for "constitution of a terrorist organization". Shortly after the annexation of Crimea, a Russian court accused the man of planning terrorist attacks.
Amnesty International, along with the federal government, the European Union and the United States, called for his release. Russian President Vladimir Putin defends Senzov's detention. During the World Cup, he reaffirmed in an appearance on television, the allegations of terrorism against Senzow.
