Pink diamond auctioned in Geneva for 39 million euros

A pink diamond of just under 19 carats won a prize of 39.1 million euros at an auction in Geneva. The deal had been preceded on Tuesday night by a six-minute auction fight at Christie's auction house.

The starting price of the "Pink Legacy" was 21 million euros. Because of its weight and intense color, almost completely uniform, the jewel was considered by connoisseurs as extremely extraordinary.

Only one diamond out of 100,000 has such quality, they said. The estimated price was 27 to 44 million euros. The jewel once belonged to the Oppenheimer family.

The strong demand for extremely rare parts has led to a sharp rise in prices in recent years. The record diamond "Pink Star" had changed hands in 2017 at an auction in Hong Kong for an amount of about 67 million euros. The titles also made the sale of a blue diamond two years ago for around 51 million euros. (SDA / dpa)
