Refueling – How to save money with little tricks

Prices for gasoline and diesel are rising again. Also because of holidays. How motorists should behave

Hamburg. Favorable times for motorists are over. For a little over a year, gasoline and diesel prices have risen again, especially in recent months. Just Super E10 and diesel have increased about ten percent since March, as shown in a price overview of the ADAC. A relaxation at the pump is not expected in the second half of the year. Where and when can I still refuel at a lower cost? Why is north of Germany in the national comparison rather cheap? How will the price of gas develop? The evening paper spoke with experts and answered the key questions.

"The price of oil has been rising for some time already"

"We have been in a period of rising crude oil prices for some time.Edelmann, HSH Nordbank's commodity expert, the Abendblatt This shift is increasingly reflected in gasoline and diesel prices as fuel demand rises over the holiday season. "Brent and WTI crude oil prices rose 61 and 70 percent in twelve months, "says Edelmann, who is expecting a crude oil price of about $ 80 per barrel (159 liters) Brent currently costs $ 75.50

What time can it it was the cheapest fueling in Hamburg?

Three or four years ago, there was still a downward trend in prices at petrol stations. "In the morning, prices were very high, then they fell during the day to get up again at night, "says Andreas Hölzel of the ; ADAC. "Now our research shows that there are several important price spikes during the day." By far, the most expensive refueling time in the 24-hour cycle is between 6 and 9 hours of the morning. During this period, the price per liter of Super E10 and diesel will exceed the daily average of up to six cents. In May 2018, all the price movements of the more than 14,000 service stations in Germany were carried out. If we bypbad these phases of high prices, we can refuel at little cost: between 9h and 12h, between 15h and 17h30. 9:30 pm "In these phases, Super E10 and diesel prices are three cents lower than the daily average," says Hölzel. After 22 hours, prices rise again, as many gas stations have closed at night. Higher prices may therefore be required at a few open service stations.

Which brands of service stations
are the cheapest?

No matter the weather, you can save money by looking for specific service station chains. According to the supplier of fuel price applications Clever-Tanken, HEM, Jet and Star are among the cheapest brands, "says Daniel Pöhler, mobility expert on the consumer portal Finanztip. According to Aral, Shell and Esso and Total are the most expensive. "In principle, you should instead choose free service stations and supermarkets," says Pöhler. These are about two cents per liter cheaper than well-known oil companies' stations

How to prevent an expensive refueling
on the highway?

In all cases, you must leave with a full tank. "Refueling is more expensive than on the highway," says Hölzel. Even a small detour can be worth it. Often, petrol stations are located near highway exits. For example, the Super E10 at Shell's Großmoorbogen gas station in Harburg is 7% cheaper than at the Aral gas station in the nearby Stillhorn East roadside station (based on several samples taken on July 11th). ). For diesel, the price difference that day was even close to ten percent. ADAC also found in a study significant price differences between motorway service stations and neighboring rival stations. The pbadenger can use petroleum applications to determine prices before leaving the highway. Because these price differences do not always have to exist. "It still depends on the conditions of competition in the field," says Hölzel

Since the end of August 2013, the 14,000 or so service stations in Germany are forced to change the prices of the most common Super E5 fuels, Report Super E10 and Diesel "real time" at the Market Transparency Unit for fuels. It transmits the incoming price data to the information service providers to the consumers. From this data, price comparison applications such as smart refueling, ADAC fuel prices or fuel price monitor are provided with prices. "Consumers have better opportunities to compare prices and save money by supplying low-cost suppliers," says Hölzel. Even within a small radius of five kilometers, the price differences between cheap and expensive suppliers in Hamburg are three percent for the Super E10 and four percent for the diesel. However, only 60% of consumers practice a regular price comparison (see chart)

What is the price level in Ham burg?

According to a study by the ADAC, Super E10 is powered in Hamburg, then in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schleswig-Holstein. The most expensive is the fuel in Thuringia. "The price difference of 6.4 cents in May 2018 between the cheapest and the most expensive federal state is felt when paying the fuel bill," says Hölzel. A 50-liter gas tank in Thuringia costs 3.20 euros more than in Hamburg. Diesel is the cheapest in Hamburg and the most expensive in Saarland. "In city-states, the density of service stations and therefore the competition is particularly important," says Alexander von Gersdorff of the Mineralölwirtschaftsverband. The proximity of refineries is another reason for low prices. According to an overview of the badociation, some cities stand out again and again with low fuel prices. In the north are the Flensburg, Rostock, Schwerin and Lübeck.

How to save fuel?

Super E10 with up to ten percent biofuel is powered by relatively few motorists. "The market share is 13%," says von Gersdorff. Fuel aversion has hardly been installed since launch. Although it can be used on almost all cars according to the ADAC. "The price advantage on Super E5 is two to four cents per liter," von Gersdorff explains. However, energy efficiency is also one to two percent lower. In Finland, the proportion of E10 is 70%, in France 30%. Proper tire pressure also affects fuel consumption. "A reduced air pressure of 0.3 bar increases rolling resistance by six per cent and at 1.0 bar it is 30 per cent, resulting in an additional consumption of three to five per cent", explains Hölzel. Bicycle transport at the rear of the vehicle also offers fuel savings on the roof of the vehicle. "The rise in production in Venezuela and the US embargo on Iran will be partially offset by Opec's decision to increase its production," he added. says Edelmann, expert at HSH. As a result, virtually no price mitigation effects can be expected. In addition, inventories would continue to decline. As long as Trump's tariff plans and the counter-reactions of China and the European Union do not significantly affect the economy, the demand for crude oil is expected to remain high. However, there is hope for motorists. "We expect the euro to regain strength against the dollar by the end of the year," Edelmann said. This would slow the rise in gasoline and diesel prices because the starting product is paid in dollars. However, consumers should also adapt to high price fluctuations
