Services: La Poste aims for a "significant" increase in shipping costs

So many letters are not sent today – by e-mail or by chat, communication is much faster. Nevertheless, letters remain an important part of everyday life. Your expedition will be more expensive.

Consumers will have to adapt to a much higher letter postage over the next year. Post's managing director, Frank Appel, told Bonn about the contraction in the mail business for years: "We remain confident that we will see a significant increase in prices here."

He justified this with higher staff costs and falling demand. In the first nine months of 2018, the volume of letters from Deutsche Post decreased by 4.4% to about 13.06 billion units in the Federal Republic of Germany compared to the same period of the year before.

At the end of November, the Post Office has not yet sent data to the Federal Network Agency so that the authority can set a price range for the postage of the letter. The new prices could then apply from the spring.

Currently, a standard letter in Germany costs 70 cents. The last price increase was in 2016, when a shipment cost 8 cents more. Originally, the current tariff is only expected to apply until the end of 2018. After internal turmoil and a profit warning in the summer, the Bonn-based company has not communicated to the regulatory authority the requested data. As a result, the network agency put the approval process on hold – the planned increase in shipping costs to January was causing nothing.

Call did not mean anything on the new postage of a standard letter. It is a decision of the Federal Network Agency that sets a price, said the official.

The CEO also presented the third quarter figures. The letter and parcel business (Pep) was in the red – mainly because the company was sending the officials of its time as a state – owned company to early retirement for a lot of money. Conversion costs alone reached the summer quarter with 392 million euros to be booked. Call was nevertheless optimistic: the measures in the postal mail sector were gaining in magnitude and had a positive effect.

This has happened well in the express transport and freight sectors. However, the overall numbers were moderate: in the third quarter, sales rose 1.4% year-over-year to about 14.8 billion euros. In total, the group generated just under 146 million euros, 77% less than a year earlier. The stock market took the numbers but positive, the last post-stock very badly changed slightly. Reason: The figures were probably not as bad as feared by the financial players.
