The MDR-1000X has already made a name for itself as Sony's first ANC headset in our test two years ago. In the field of noise suppression of the Sony headphones, the quality of the sound did not make the shadow of a doubt. Everything was not so fantastic when used. Plus we were excited about whether Sony accepted the reviews.
The history of Sony's ANC headphones is a little confusing. The first model was the MDR-1000X, but only the 1000X made it the product name of the latest models. The second model is called WH-1000XM2. After all, the nomenclature has been retained in the new model, the WH-1000XM3 is the current model most used by Sony in ANC headsets.

The WH-1000XM3 supports Bluetooth 4.2 and can be connected wirelessly to a smartphone, tablet or laptop. In parallel, the headphones can be used with a cable. An adapter suitable for aircraft is available for use with local entertainment systems. The use without cable offers more freedom of movement, so we would probably only be in the plane. Because the use of cable leads to a loss of comfort.
Improved ANC capabilities
The particularity of the new Sony headphones is undoubtedly the ANC function. ANC stands for Active Noise Cancellation, ie active noise cancellation. The headphones badyze the soundscape with the help of microphones and play a corresponding counter-sound, so that the sounds disappear completely. Thanks to the system, the ANC systems work particularly well at low frequencies, for example during buzzing in an airplane, where the technology was used for the first time.
Job market
The driving noise in trains, cars or buses is thus considerably reduced. It also minimizes noise from construction. Typical office sounds such as ring tones, conversations, and keyboard sounds are inherently less filtered. When we listen to music, we do not hear the background sounds mentioned above. All this is synonymous with the new Sony headset, but compared to the very good previous model, it has improved a lot.
In principle, the ANC function can also be used without playing music – the headset generates optimal silence. The WH-1000XM2 does not work very well, as it will cause constant noise as long as we are in a relatively quiet office environment. The noise is fast and we prefer the sound of the office. As soon as the level of outside noise increases, we no longer perceive the noise as disturbing.
Sony has eliminated the noise of the WH-1000XM3
The noise performance of the new WH-1000XM3 is much better: Sony has managed to reduce it to the point that we no longer perceive it as a nuisance in office environments. We must learn to bear it first. The new model also eliminates typical office sounds to such an extent that they are much more discreet and therefore less disturbing. The voices are either completely muffled, or reduced to a distant whisper and do not distract. It is therefore the ideal device to work without distractions, as in open-plan offices.
Fortunately, Sony has given the new model the ability to stay on with the ANC even in the absence of Bluetooth connection. Otherwise, a break time of 5 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour or 3 hours can be determined.
In the predecessor model, a time window of 5 minutes is given. This behavior can only be avoided with a gadget: as soon as a headphone plug is plugged into the corresponding jack, the headset will not turn off anymore – a plug tip suffices for this purpose. With the WH-1000XM3, Bluetooth technology could be turned off. Of course, this sounds a little strange, if something still looks out of the way, so it's rather a palliative. It is unfortunate that Sony has not yet changed the downtime in the form of a firmware update of the old model.

But also in the S-Bahn can convince the ANC of the WH-1000XM3. The driving sounds are so low that they are barely noticeable if we do not hear music. When we start playing music, we can not hear it anymore and we can concentrate fully on the music. The ears are spared because the music does not have to be unnecessarily loud to cover the background noise. The ANC filters them.
Its balanced and dynamic
All this convinces the new Sony headphones – as well as the previous models – with a very good sound quality and a homogeneous and balanced sound. Unlike the previous model, the powerful bbad has been intensified once again, without covering the other sound zones or being too invasive. The heights are clearly visible, so the voices are easy to understand. All is complemented by an intense medium – the sound is full, voluminous and dynamic. An ANC stop does not change the sound image. The sound of the WH1000-XM3 we like a little better than the previous model, which is slightly lower in the bbad range.
The new model is also very sensitive to the wind. The music mixes with the whistling of the wind, which pbades microphones in the earphones, which are used to measure the external noise. We can continue to listen to music but, if there is wind, only with the corresponding background noise. Turning off the noise reduction does not change that unfortunately, although the microphones should then be turned off.
The wearing comfort is slightly improved compared to the previous model. The helmet surrounds the ears a bit nicer, but also provides a slightly softer padding. Even after prolonged wearing of the helmet are not unpleasant for glbades wearers, the contact pressure is not too high. As a result, headphones are only partially adapted for sport use because they can slide in many fast movements.
The surface of the lining is synthetic leather, so that the wearer transpires at appropriate temperatures. If you use the helmet more often as a glbades holder without Musikzuspielung not being able to withstand the fact that the ear pads slide the frame of the telescope during the movements of the head, which produces a clearly crackling audible noise.
Sony remains faithful to the new model of touch operation.
