"We are sad to have to announce the death of Stephen Hillenburg, the inventor of Spongebob, Sponge Head," wrote the broadcaster on Instagram. Nickelodeon's official statement continues: "We are extremely saddened by the announcement of the death of Stephen Hillenburg after a fight with ALS." The caricature was only diagnosed last March.

Stephen Hillenburg had been a "beloved friend" and a "long-time creative partner" for everyone at Nickelodeon, the broadcaster continued. Employees from all his family share Steve's ideas. "Steve gives Spongebob, Squarepants a sense of humor and a unique innocence that will delight generations of children and families around the world".
