T-Mobile and Tele2: EU approves the merger in the Netherlands

Telekom's Dutch subsidiary, T-Mobile NL, can take over the Swedish subsidiary Tele2. An in-depth investigation has shown that the proposed transaction would not result in a significant change in the price or quality of mobile services offered to Dutch consumers, EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said Tuesday evening. Initial concerns have not been confirmed.

Telekom wants to consolidate its position as third mobile operator in the Netherlands thanks to the merger. "Our clear objective is to disrupt the Dutch market with our offers and to exacerbate the pressure on KPN and VodafoneZiggo after the merger," said Søren Abildgaard, CEO of T-Mobile NL.

The telecom is paying, according to the previous data, 190 million euros to the Swedes and would then hold 75% of the new joint venture. Tele2 NL is currently the fourth largest supplier. The enlarged company will generate, according to the future of Telekom data, a conversion of about 2.0 billion euros per year and about 4.3 million customers under portable radio contract.
