Tens of thousands protest against Trump's migration policy | TIME ONLINE

Washington (DPA) – Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of dozens of US cities Saturday to protest Donald Trump's immigration policy .

Protesters, including many politicians of the democratic opposition, opposed the separation of refugee families under the motto "Families Unite" in order to place their parents behind bars for a long time. The measures are part of Trump's "zero tolerance policy", with which the US authorities want to detain illegal immigrants on the southern border with Mexico.

Trump had temporarily stopped the practice – but only to detain parents and children together. A new law on immigration fails because of resistance in parliament. In total, more than 2,500 minors have been separated from their families in recent weeks. Partially applied in court, the reunification of parents and children is slow.

The protests began on Saturday on the east coast of the United States, later steps on the west coast should be added, as in Los Angeles. In the capital Washington about 50,000 people took to the streets. Also in Boston, there was an important rally on which, among others, Senator Elizabeth Warren spoke. She called for a new job description for the Office of Immigration and Customs (ICE). Their officials were repeatedly hit by being too much of a repression against migrants.

Celebrities in Washington shared solidarity with the protesters, including singer Alicia Keys. Near the White House, a small group of counter-protesters joined the White House's policy on foreigners.
