The Argentine government imposes millions of penalties against the union

The Argentine government has fined about 25 million euros to a union. The Ministry of Labor justified the record fine by stating that the truckers' union had been on strike at the end of 2017 despite ongoing negotiations between employer and employee representatives. The law prohibits strikes in this case.

The union spoke of "political persecution". "We will appeal to justice," said union vice-general Pablo Moyano, criticizing the government's "intimidation attempt". Hugo Moyano, secretary general of the Federation of Truckers, warned that the long-distance health insurance company, which covers some 800,000 people, would be bankrupt if the union paid the fine.

The truckers put Argentina on strike at the end of June. On Friday, they participated in a protest against a government agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) last month. In the opinion of the trade unionists, this will result in high social costs for the approximately 41 million Argentineans.

In late June, a general strike against austerity measures temporarily paralyzed large areas of the country.
