Twenty years ago, the SPD and the Greens won a majority and ended the reign of Chancellor Kohl. The Chancellor of the time, Mr Schröder, now sees the political end of the approach adopted by Mrs Merkel. As in the past, he gives the party presidency – but with it, it's a mistake.
Ex-Chancellor Gerhard Schröder is expecting early parliamentary elections by the middle of next year. The former politician of the SPD said that he was waiting for Friedrich Merz to succeed Chancellor Angela Merkel as head of the CDU. Merz would hardly have the "special loyalties" that would be needed for Merkel to continue working as chancellor under another CDU president. "And I can not imagine – well – my party can bear it all." He therefore counts for new elections "at the latest at the beginning of the summer" next year.
Faced with Merkel's decision not to run for the party presidency at the CDU party conference in December, Schröder said: "Whatever the case may be, this decision will mark the end of Ms Merkel's term, whatever either was. "
Schroeder spoke at a ceremony organized by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, an affiliate of the SPD, to form the first red-green federal government 20 years ago, which he headed as chancellor until 39; in 2005. Red-Green was replaced by a grand coalition of the Union and SPD under Chancellor Merkel.
Earlier, Merkel, 74, a member of the Rheinische Post, recommended the issue of trust. "The vote of confidence is an opportunity for any Chancellor to force his supporters, and I would do it today in their place." Merkel had "exceeded her zenith". The waiver of the party office was a mistake.
The division of labor between the Federal Chancellery and the party chairman could be useful in the SPD, but not in the CDU. "The CDU is a party that relies on power and aligns with it, so the leader of the party is important to a head of government," said Schröder. Merkel had always thought that the party presidency and Chancery went hand in hand and referred to Schröder's experiments. Separation was a risk, she said in her announcement, after all.
