US President Donald J. Trump has threatened Apple products to be punitive in the future if they continue to be produced in China. Before heading to Mississippi for a date, he told reporters at the White House that Apple's iPhones and laptops imported from China could be affected by the new import tariffs in the trade dispute with the Middle Kingdom, said the report Wall Street Journal,
Trump: "Depends on the rate"
"Maybe, maybe," he says literally, "it depends on the rate." Previously, members of his government had advocated exempting products such as Apple from any additional punitive tariff – so far the group had been successful. Thus, different models of Apple Watch and AirPod wireless earplugs have been removed from the original list with new import fees. Apple manufactures almost all products in China using manufacturers such as Foxconn.
Trump sees no problem in punitive rates on iPhones or Macs. "I mean, I could fix it at 10% and people would manage it easily." What it would mean for Apple's sales is not clear. These should – as at least badysts say – for example on the iPhone XS or the already weak XR. Apple's stock has been suffering for weeks, although Monday's shares in the context of a general easing of the market rose 1.35%.
Friday's talks in Argentina
The US government is in intensive negotiations with China. Trump wants the country to open up its American product market and not steal US intellectual property. "The only deal would be for China to open its country to US competitors." It's just China, says Trump. A meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled for the end of the week in Argentina, where the G20 will meet in Buenos Aires.
The question of whether the negotiations will be effective remains totally unclear. In particular, China hopes to cancel the punitive tariffs on steel and aluminum. Trump has threatened, among other things, to increase the import duties of a $ 200 billion basket from 10% to 25% and to add more products.
