New York (dpa) – For the first time in the history of the United Nations, all member states, with the exception of USA agreed to draft a global treaty on migrations.
The United Nations General Assembly adopted Friday, New York the text of the "Global Compact for Migration". This document sets out principles for the treatment of refugees and migrants and will be formally signed at a conference in Morocco on December 10th and 11th. "No country can tackle the challenges and opportunities of this global phenomenon alone," the paper says.
According to United Nations data from December 2017, there are nearly 260 million migrants on Earth – about 3.4% of the world's population. As a result, the number of people leaving their homeland in search of peace and a better life has increased by 49% since 2000.
According to UN figures, the United States was the only one of the 193 member states of the UN to leave the negotiations. Hungary, too, sees the treaty critically and wants to decide next week whether it will attend a government meeting, said a spokeswoman for the Hungarian UN agency.

United Nations Special Envoy for Migration, Louise Arbor, warned that the "chaotic and dangerous aspects of exploitation" of migration should not become normal.
