"A terrible tragedy struck us," said the mayor of Casteldaccia, Giovanni Di Giacinto, of the Ansa news agency. The river has never presented any danger. Another dead man was found by rescuers in his car. Two people are still missing.

For a week, much of Italy has been hit by heavy rains, storms and thunderstorms. More than 30 people lost their lives with the dead of Sunday night. The head of the Civil Defense has described as "apocalyptic" the situation in the north of the country.
