VW wants to upset the scene of the small SUV with the T-Cross of the Next year. We drove the prototypes and discovered that the small crossover already makes a very adult impression.

"We arrive late, but correct," Andreas Krüger, production manager of the VW T-Cross, repeats the well-known mantra of the car manufacturer of Lower Saxony. Until now, the tactic of observing and entering the market has so far had a positive impact on the Wolfsburg car manufacturer. There is no doubt that the T-Cross will find its buyers. The fact that the least comes from the internal car of brother Polo, notes reluctantly at Volkswagen. Finally, the VW dealer has finally in his own sales room for a long time missing alternative SUV. The VW T-Cross is aimed at customers who appreciate the practicality

More insight than for the Polo "Bruder" due to the higher hip point

"We believe we will have a high conquest rate ", says Andreas Krüger confident. VW executives always keep the price to themselves, only a "well below 20,000 euros" can elicit responsible managers. Presumably, entry into the T-Cross will start at just over 16,000 euros. Apparently, you have watched very closely the Renault Captur, the European bestseller on this segment. The rear seat is movable 15 centimeters (Captur 16 centimeters) and the trunk is 385 to 1281 liters capacity a room more spacious than the Captur (377 to 1235 liters). Even in the dimensions of French 4.12 meters long and the German does not give much. The T-Cross is 4.11 meters long and 1.56 meters high, 54 millimeters longer and 112 millimeters higher than Brother Polo. This also affects in an increase of the H point (hip point) of about ten inches; so you win at the T-Cross also at the preview.

Support systems and equipment variants of the group construction kit

The pound with which VW wants to proliferate are the systems of badistance and d & # 39; # 39; infotainment. The Emergency Brake Assist detects pedestrians up to a speed of 65 km / h and badistance for blind spots runs without speed limitation. The infotainment comes from the corporate shelf, which means: an eight-inch touch screen and a virtual badpit. Without VW shares equal and the power of purchase would be something in the segment of the very competitive small cars, in which every penny is reversed twice, not possible. In addition to the four USB ports (two at the front and two at the back), the T-Cross also offers the option of inductive charging. The interior is functional but anything but unsightly. "In terms of handling, there is no question mark," says Klaus Bischoff, head of design at VW.

Customers can choose from five lines of equipment for the T-Cross: Trendline, Comfortline, Highline, Designline or the sporty R-Line. There are twelve paint finishes and various decors with optional 3D patterns, which should slightly relax the interior. The wheels of the small car crossover are from 16 to at least 18 inches tall and the engines are the 1.0 TSI with 70 kW / 95 hp and 85 kW / 115 hp, the 1.5 TSI with 110 kW / 150 hp and the 1,6 TDI with 70 kW / 95 hp used. That the basic version still has to do with a five-speed gear, leads to the first frown. As an alternative, the two-speed, seven-speed gearbox is also available for the more powerful gasoline engine.

Otherwise, the famous three-cylinder gasoline engine wagered as planned. No frills and discreet, like the whole car. As long as you can go slowly, the engine also retains acoustically and you do not feel too weak. Only if we pull a little more on the reins, the three pots naturally announce something more emphatically to the word. The chbadis is comfortably tuned and leaves a good impression. It is only during the crossing of rapid and successive transverse joints that the torsion beam rear axle strikes something. "It's our turn," says Andreas Krüger. The time is still enough, after all, the T-Cross will come on the market next year. However, there will be no four-wheel drive later and a GTI version is not provided either. Let's hope that both will change in the cycle of the model.
