Will the biggest German airline lift the future with the Boeing 787 light-duty jet? Lufthansa CEO Spohr confirms discussions on a possible major order for the long term. The European aircraft manufacturer Airbus could go out empty-handed.
Lufthansa is openly considering expanding its long-haul fleet to the Boeing 787 "Dreamliner". "We are negotiating additional orders with Airbus and Boeing for long-haul aircraft," said Carsten Spohr, CEO of Lufthansa.
The Boeing 787 "Dreamliner", prestigious model of the main US competitor of Airbus, is a possible alternative to the order of a new Airbus A350 from the European aircraft manufacturer. "We are looking at it very closely," he told the Aero Aviation Portal.
According to Spohr, both types of aircraft are ideally suited for connections from major hubs, such as Frankfurt and Munich, where the demand for very large carriers is insufficient. "We would not use the A350 and B787 side by side in the same hub," he said. "But that can be an option in different places."
Lufthansa has for many years been supporting a diverse fleet of Boeing and Airbus aircraft on long-haul routes. By contrast, on medium-haul aircraft, Spohr has standardized the fleet of Lufthansa and its subsidiaries such as Eurowings, Swiss and Austrian Airlines in recent years with the Airbus model family. The purpose of this measure was to reduce the costs of maintenance, repair and training of pilots.
