CHICAGO – Gerrit Cole will start for the Yankees on Monday when they face the Angels in the Bronx, in what will be his first game since striking COVID IL after experiencing what he called “mild” symptoms.
The right-hander was part of the team’s latest outbreak and said he had no explanation as to why they had been hit so hard by the virus this season – nor what the players and the staff could do differently.
“If I had any idea of what behavior I did or how I got it, I would definitely advocate an adjustment,” Cole said on Sunday before the Yankees played their series final against the White. Sox at the Guaranteed Rate Field. “But I have no idea where I got it from… I have no idea how to avoid this.”
Cole added, “It’s not like we go to filthy bars and grind until four in the morning.”
At this point Cole said the team “will keep their fingers crossed … and hopefully we get over most of them before the playoffs.”
Of his debut on Monday, Cole said he was “good to go,” although the Yankees will be watching him closely to ensure his stamina has not been affected by COVID.
