Gerrit Cole’s Yankees gem likely cost him an appearance among the stars

Gerrit Cole’s 129-shot masterpiece will likely cost him the chance to make it into the All-Star Game.

The Yankees ace was pushed to the limit on Saturday for a full-game gem, a 1-0 victory over the Astros. But it took the most pitching of his career, which means he shouldn’t pitch an inning Tuesday in Denver for the American League All-Star team.

“Probably after [Saturday] evening, I’d rather not let him go on Tuesday, ”manager Aaron Boone said before the Yankees closed the first half in Houston. “I think Gerrit had fully planned to pitch a round on Tuesday and I think he takes that honor seriously and was looking forward to going. But after [Saturday] night, it’s probably best to prevent it from actually launching.

Boone said he spoke to Cole about the decision on Sunday morning and reached out to Rays manager Kevin Cash, who will lead the AL team, to let him know.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether another pitcher would replace Cole on the roster.

Cole, who was voted his fourth all-star team by his teammates, lowered his first-half ERA to 2.68 with Saturday’s shutout. His absence means none of New York’s aces will make the all-star game after Mets’ Jacob deGrom, who was likely to start for the National League team, pulled out of the event in order to rest and to get back in shape for the second half. .
