EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) – A snake escaped from a pet that apparently slipped into the washing machine of a suburban Chicago family ended up feeling like a softener after being washed.

Sanela Kamencic told WMAQ-TV that she was "totally fucked up" when the snake arrived on Wednesday in the Evanston washing machine.

Police officer Pedro Carrasco and Animal Control Officer Jason Pound brought the reptile to the Exotic Animal Hospital in Chicago. Carrasco said he found his head leaning on the washing machine. Pound said she "felt like Downy" after surviving the wash cycle.

Veterinarian Melissa Giese told WBBM that the snake was "pretty good" and "really spirited".

The veterinary hospital reports that the wheat snake, named Penelope, belonged to a 12-year-old boy living nearby. They were reunited after.
