They were in the streets of Maiduguri, hungry and exposed to elements seeking temporary shelter before settling in the IDP camps. Six years after Shettima Baba-Kura Alkali left his home on a group of people fleeing the attacks, the refugees still can not return home.
In Nigeria, in the Lake Chad region, hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced by the fighting.
And a recent increase in attacks by Boko Haram fighters means that they may have to wait even longer before returning home.
