Armed thieves shot and killed a 25-year-old nurse on the Subinso-Nchiraa road in Wenchi municipality, Bono region.
Two others, who have suffered various injuries, are responding to treatment at Wenchi Methodist Hospital.
The driver of a taxi with registration number GW 4850 X, which carried the four passengers from Subinso to Nchiraa, is in critical condition and was referred to Komfo Anokye University Hospital in Kumasi after also being shot dead by thieves in the head.
Recounting their ordeal, a 50-year-old mason, Ofosu Nuamah, said the incident happened between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday evening as they were returning from Subinso to Nchiraa.
According to him, the thieves set up a roadblock with motorcycles about three miles before reaching Nchiraa.
He said the armed thieves rushed towards them in the middle of the road and started shooting them.
This, he said, caused serious injuries to some passengers and the death of the nurse who works at the Nchiraa health center.
“My hand was on the top of the seat and one of the bullets penetrated her and hit the nurse, killing her instantly,” Ofosu Nuamah said.
He added that a distress call had been made to the police to rescue them, but they never came until a Good Samaritan came to transport the injured to the health center in Subinso before being referred to. Wenchi.
Wenchi Methodist Hospital medical director Dr Oman confirmed in an interview that the four crash victims were brought to the facility around 8 p.m. on Saturday.
