Ten 20-foot confiscated containers allegedly escorted by national security from one terminal to another in the Tema port enclave have disappeared.
The 20-foot containers that were supposed to be filled with canned tomatoes were transported from the Tema Container Terminal (TCT) to the Atlas for a distance of about 9.9 kilometers.
The containers according to the information were clbadified as cargoes having exceeded their length of stay and were transferred to Atlas for further examination and necessary measures.
But at present, none of the 10 containers can be found at the port of Tema.
The incident shocked many workers in the port, confirming that two customs officers of the Tax Administration Prevention Service of Ghana were part of the security elements.
Strangely, both agents filed a report on May 30, 2019 stating that the containers had been delivered.
Management later found, however, that the ten 20-foot containers had never been delivered to Atlas, the intended destination.
Officers of the Tema Command of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority opened an investigation into the circumstances in which the 20-foot containers disappeared from the port during a transfer to another terminal.
In addition, the navy police question the two customs officers, while efforts are made to intercept the containers.
Meanwhile, the agents believed that the containers were smuggled to Kumasi in the Ashanti region.
Ghana's tax administration officials reportedly moved to Kumasi to identify the goods and eventually recover them.
Dr. Godfred Oko Appiah, deputy commander of the GRA and head of the GRA at Tema, said that it was unfortunate to insist that the law strictly apply to the people concerned.
