NIGERIA: After serving 18 years in prison, Nigeria's oldest prisoner, sentenced to death, was released after receiving state pardon.
A 100-year-old death row prisoner, nicknamed "Nigeria's oldest prisoner," was released after receiving a pardon. He had spent more than 18 years in prison after being convicted of murder. Egbunuche was met outside the Enugu State's maximum security prison by his daughter and representatives of the Global Society for Anti-Corruption, an NGO that had campaigned for his release. "I am so grateful to God for this day," revealed his daughter Chisom Celestine in an interview. "I am the happiest human being on Earth," she added.
Egbunuche, who suffers from health problems, including diabetes and vision problems, is currently hospitalized for observation, but is worried about what will happen to him later. Her daughter says that she can not afford to take care of him.
While he was in prison, his son Paul, who was also imprisoned for the same murder, was taking care of him. He has not been pardoned and remains in prison. The state government that pardoned Egbunuche has been replaced by a new administration and it is unclear whether they will offer it or not badistance.
