Suspects are escorted out of court
The remaining four people who were tried for their involvement in the violent raid on the Kwabenya police station to release detainees were sentenced to 114 months in prison.
Prince Osei, aka Bebe, faced a charge of firearm possession; Prince Kofi Acheampong was facing possession of firearms; While Nancy Dentaa and Kofi Seshie were accused of escaping legal custody.
They all pleaded not guilty to charges against them by the state for their involvement in planning and executing the release from prison that resulted in the death of Inspector Emmanuel Ashilevi (nowadays). 39, which is ASP).
The defendants, in their defense in court, presided over by His Honor, Aboagye Tandoh, denied any role in the incident, leaving the burden on the prosecution to prove guilt or otherwise.
Defense
In his defense, Prince Osei vehemently denied that a firearm and six rounds had been found on him, but the police claimed he had not disclosed the truth to the courts.
He told the court that after his arrest by the police, they searched him for about five minutes, but nothing was found on him.
However, the court found that his testimony flagrantly contradicted his warning statement, in which he claimed that the weapon had been given to him by Prince Kofi Acheampong, who had also invited him to join his gang. thieves.
The court later found him guilty of possessing a firearm without legal authorization and therefore convicted him.
Kofi Acheampong also denied having knowledge of the gun and said that he did not know Prince Osei who had told the police that he had recovered him.
However, the court found that the evidence he presented contradicted his statement to the police in which he claimed to know Prince Osei and called him Yaw and Bebe.
The court therefore concluded that Prince Kofi Acheampong had instigated Prince Osei to possess a firearm without legal authorization.
The court also found that Nancy Dentaa had incited Kwabenya police cell detainees to escape.
Although Nancy denied hissing the phone to one Dickson Ofori in police cells on the blind side of the police, the court again ruled that his testimony in court flagrantly contradicted his statement of caution in the police. which she admitted to having charged a phone said Dickson without the knowledge of the police.
Sentencing
The judge who presided over the hearing, Mr. Tandoh, sentenced the four judges to an overcrowded court and took into account the plea of defense lawyers, George Asamane and Bernard Owiredu Donkor, and the fact that the convicted had already spent 13 months in prison.
He subsequently sentenced Prince Osei and Prince Kofi Acheampong to a 40-month imprisonment each for possession of firearms without lawful authorization and without complicity.
The court said that Prince Osei, who had already been sentenced to 30 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to evading legal custody, would serve his sentence at the same time.
Nancy Denta and Kofi Seshie were also sentenced to 17 months' imprisonment for inciting escape from legal detention.
