12 die of inhalation of toxic breath

Twelve people died after choking in a mining tunnel in the Gbane community in Talensi district in the Far East region.

The miners reportedly died of inhaling toxic gases following an explosion while they were underground in a mining tunnel near another mining concession served by a Chinese company called Shaanxi.

Several others are also admitted to the Bolgantaga Regional Hospital and Afrikids Hospital undergoing treatment for suffocation.

The incident allegedly took place on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 around 10 pm.

The victims would have died between 1am and 2am.

Adam Ahmed Mahama, Deputy Senior Regional Police Officer (DSP), confirmed the incident to Graphic Online. He said the incident occurred after the Shaanxi Mining Company blew rocks into a tunnel through parts of the tunnel. the victims worked.

According to him, the Shaanxi Mining Company blasted them around 10 pm on Tuesday, January 22, adding that before proceeding with blasting, they went to check the tunnel if there was anyone in the tunnel.

During the reconnaissance, he discovered that some of the victims were working in the tunnel. They (the Shanxii staff) fired them and "even arrested" them.

DSP Mahama said the blasting was over, adding that "according to them (Shaanxi), they do it every night".

He told Graphic Online that later, after the blasting, some of the company's staff had received distress calls around 12 pm, indicating that a person had collapsed around their area.
He added that some of the company's personnel went on site to control the person in question and also suggested to their ambulance to send the victim to the hospital.

According to DSP Mahama, many miners were in the tunnel at the time of the incident, pointing out that there were many in the pit.

He added that "when that happened, they (the victims) tried to evacuate" the tunnel but inhaled toxic gases from the explosion since the tunnel crosses into the ground.

"When the police examined the bodies, they were not mutilated," he said, noting that all the dead had been sent to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital for storage and autopsy. survivors being treated in the same facility.

According to him, this is not the first time that people are dying in hiding after inhaling toxic gases from the explosion of a Shaanxi company mine.
