About 12,000 HIV-contaminated blood products were reportedly sold by one of China's largest medical blood product manufacturers to hospitals nationwide.

The National Health Commission of China issued a statement Tuesday urging hospitals to immediately suspend the use of the lot.

The defective lot, produced by Shanghai Xinxing, consisted of 12,229 plasma bottles that were due to expire in June 2021.

The products were due to expire in June 2021 and had already been approved by the Shanghai Food and Drug Inspection Institute.

The Jiangxi Province Control and Prevention Authority has detected HIV antibodies when testing an intravenous lot of immunoglobulin, reported Sixth Tone.

Immunoglobins are clbadified as antibodies produced by white blood cells that can treat immune deficiency, including leukemia.

Hospitals were asked to monitor those who were treated in batches.

Ten hospitals have already confirmed that they have not yet found any patient who has contracted HIV.

The Shanghai Food and Drug Administration has ordered Shanghai Xinxing to stop producing these products.

Wang Yuedan, deputy director of the immunology department of the Beijing University Health Sciences Center, told Bejing News: "The detection of HIV antibodies could indicate that the products have been infected by people infected with HIV.

"The risk of HIV transmission exists but is slim."

He comes just a month after 145 children in Jiangsu Province were treated with old polio vaccines.

In July of last year, 252,600 rabies vaccines were given to toddlers.
