Some 135 cases of the new COVID-19 variant from Delta-India have been recorded at one of Ghana’s elite schools; Achimota.

During an update on the coronavirus by the Ghana Health Service at the Ministry of Information on Sunday, July 4, it was revealed that the cases had been registered after some students at the school were tested.

Ghana Health Service’s director of public health, Dr Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, in an interview with GhanaWeb on Saturday, revealed that most of the students who contracted the virus were asymptomatic and responded to treatment although he refused to give more details.

“There is an epidemic in the school (name withheld), they did some tests, some of them had a Delta strain … Noguchi decided to do some specialized testing … when they did the tests. tests, they realized that some of the students had Delta tension… most of the students are in fact asymptomatic and I’m sure on Tuesday they would all have been released, ”said Dr Asiedu-Bekoe.

He noted that these recorded cases of the Delta strain show that the highly contagious variant is in the community.

But giving more details on the fast-spreading Delta variant that was first registered in Ghana a few days ago, officials from the Ghana Health Service revealed that some students had been infected.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Ghana’s Director General of Health Services Dr Kuma Aboagye said more than 800 students and staff have been tested for COVID after three students tested positive between the 14th. and June 16, 2021.

He noted that out of the more than 800 tested, the results of 550 that came up showed that 135 tests were positive.

So far, 89 students and staff have recovered, leaving 46 active cases in the school.

“Due to an improved approach trying to contain the situation we had, approximately 843 students were sampled. 348 of them are boarding students, 459 are day students, 36 of them are teachers and non-teachers were tested, ”he said.

Adding: “We have received the results of approximately 843 samples… so far out of the 550, 135 have tested positive, so we are awaiting the 293 samples that were collected yesterday.

“The 135 cases at the time of diagnosis were either asymptomatic or had mild to moderate illness. A staff member also recorded a positive result.”
