KINSHASA: About 150 people are missing after the sinking of a boat on a lake in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, President Felix Tshisekedi announced on Tuesday.

"I am very saddened by the sinking of a canoe on Monday, April 15, on Lake Kivu. The provisional record is 150 missing persons," said Tshisekedi on his office's Twitter account.

Delphin Mbirimbi, a local activist from South Kivu province, told Reuters that the boat from the neighboring province of North Kivu had been wrecked on the lake near Kalehe territory.

He said three bodies were found, 33 people were saved and another 150 pbadengers were missing.

Tshisekedi said that he was following the situation closely "in order to identify and punish those responsible".

Deadly boat accidents are common in the Congo, a vast wooded country where few roads are outside major cities and ships are frequently loaded well beyond their capacity.
