File: The abandoned Galamsey pit has been transformed into a playground pool for local children
A 16-year-old student drowned in an abandoned mining pit at Kodobeda, a community located near Anyinam, in East Atiwa district, in the East region.
The body of the deceased identified as Desmond Quaye was recovered and deposited at the morgue of the government hospital of Kibi.
The student of the preparatory school Oint, a student of junior high (JHS 2), drowned when he tried to swim in the abandoned pit of Galamsey, illegally transformed into pool by local children.
Anyinam police opened an investigation into the incident.
A report from the World Health Organization published in 2018 indicated that drowning was the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury deaths worldwide, accounting for 7% of all injury deaths.
Approximately 360,000 drowning deaths occur each year worldwide. Children and women with increased access to water are more likely to drown.
In Ghana, abandoned illegal mining pits scattered in the country's mining districts are the main cause of the rising drowning cases in the country.
The government's promise to recover all abandoned mining pits has not been fulfilled, exposing many rural residents to drownings.
