It's bad for you if you eat unprepared food, make sure it's done accordingly! In India, an 18-year-old teenager unfortunately pbaded away because it was thought that he was eating undercooked pork, which affected his brain.
The New England Journal of Medicine, one of the most prestigious peer-reviewed medical journals, has recently published a new case report written by Dr. Nishanth Dev, of ESIC Medical College, at Faridabad, India. In his report, Dr. Nishanth treated an 18-year-old boy when he was rushed to hospital after having tonic-clonic seizures and fainting.
He also looked confused at the hospital, which was common among people with this disease. These seizures usually last between one and three minutes because an electric shock affects the entire brain and causes loss of consciousness.
At the hospital, the unidentified teen's parents said the boy had complained of pain in the groin area last week. After a physical examination, the doctors also discovered that there was a sensitivity in the right testicle and swelling in the right eye.
They decided to send it for further verification and an MRI showed that there were problems throughout his brain, including lesions in the brainstem of the boy and cysts in the cerebellum and cerebral cortex. This brain injury has been found to be compatible with life-threatening neurocysticercosis and is caused by parasitic larvae.
Neurocysticercosis is caused by pork tapeworm Taenia Solium which can be found in undercooked pork. When the larvae are not treated in the body, this causes their accumulation in the muscles, skin and eyes of the central nervous system until neurocysticercosis occurs, which is the most serious form of the disease. , reports the WHO.
Serological tests confirmed that the adolescent had contracted T. solium and they started treating him with anti-inflammatory steroid dexamethasone and antiepileptic drugs. Antiparasitic drugs have not been administered as they could worsen the cysts in his brain.
Unfortunately, after two weeks of treatment at the hospital, the teenager succumbed to the disease and died.
Do not forget to always make sure your food is prepared properly because you do not want to get sick!
