Eastern Region Minister-designate Eric Kwakye Darfur confirmed that two people had been arrested in connection with the ambulance attack that resulted in the death of his driver.
In an interview with Adom News, Mr. Darfur admitted that although the police were slow to make major arrests in connection with the case, it was due to a lack of critical information from key witnesses.
According to him, the pregnant woman and other paramedics who were victims and witnesses of the attack were traumatized after the incident and refused to talk about it.
“After this horrific event, the victims were traumatized, so it took more than three to four days for the police to get a statement from them. And with the information that the police obtained from the victim, they were able to establish leads that led to the arrest of these two people, ”he told Edwin Siaw of Adom News.
In the wee hours of Thursday, highway thieves attacked an ambulance vehicle carrying a pregnant woman in labor from Akuse government hospital to Koforidua regional hospital.
The driver who was shot in the eye then died on Saturday.
But the pregnant woman and the paramedic who were on board were harassed and stolen from their money and their cell phones.
Meanwhile, the regional minister-designate assured residents that the police will work fervently to ensure that the 9 thieves who committed the heinous crime are brought to justice.
“The police are taking steps to ensure that this incident does not happen again. The stretch is bushy and full of curves, which is why these thieves are committing these crimes.
“The police will therefore improve their game. He cannot patrol every square inch of the road, but all the measures that must be taken to ensure that the incident does not occur will be fully implemented. “
