Two drivers who conspired to rob a taxi driver of his car, cell phone and cash were each sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment by a Kumasi district court.
Clement Kwadwo Senyanta and Bright Avornyo attacked the taxi driver and sprayed pepper in his eyes.
They then took it out and took the taxi, the Samsung S-7 mobile phone worth 1,200.00 GH and 600.00 GH.
They pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery.
The prosecutor, ASP Florence Adda, told the court that the two convicts were living in Atwima Boko, near Kumasi, while Osei Bonsu, the plaintiff and the taxi driver, lived in Krofrom, a suburb of Kumasi.
The court, chaired by Ms. Patricia Amponsah, learned that the incident occurred on February 11, 2019 at about 1 pm when the plaintiff who was driving his Toyota Corolla under the registration number GR-491- 10 sentenced by Bantama to transmit to Agric Nzema, also to Kumasi.
He told the court that after their arrival at Agric Nzema, the defendants had requested to land in the area of College Agric.
At a location near their compound, they ordered the taxi driver to stop and he did so.
Senyanta, who was at the back, grabbed the complainant's head from behind and gave him a big slap on the cheek, after which he sprayed pepper in his eyes.
The court also learned that Senyanta had then pushed him out of the car and that Avornyo, his accomplice, had taken over the steering wheel and was gone.
The complainant shouted for help and, after some good Samaritans helped him find his way, he reported the case to the police.
On March 5, 2019, the police, acting on an information, arrested the convicts in Kukuom, near Goaso, in the Ahafo region, where they intercepted the stolen vehicle and arrested the convicts.
They were subsequently charged with investigations and presented to the court.
