2019 could be another "good" year for LGBTQ people in the cinema

In terms of homobadual and trans representation, the film has always lagged behind everyone, even our most stupid mediums. I've survived the scene of homobadual cheeks in Foxfire for more than a decade before Blue is the hottest color and Pariah came to deliver me from the romcompocalypse.

Fortunately, 2018 has been a remarkably better year for LGBTQ people in Hollywood. More than half of the films nominated for the best movie featured an LGBTQ character, prompting GLAAD President Sarah Ellis to talk about a "record year for LGBTQ inclusion in films" .

It's way too early to call 2019 a decisive year for LGBTQ people in the cinema, or even a well year for LGBTQ people in the movie. It is reasonable, however, to badume that this could be the same better year for the community, especially on the screens where they were the most absent: the big ones.

Here is an overview of what lies ahead:

1. Jérémie Terminator LeRoy

If you are a literary queer of Generation X, you will certainly remember the J.T. Leroy scandal. In the 90s, the author Laura Albert has published several novels under the fictitious name "J.T. Leroy". For a while, Albert asked Savannah Knoop, his boyfriend's half-sister, to play the role of J.T. in real life. Nobody knew the true identity of Leroy. "J.T." began becoming a grunge scenographer and became friends with Billy Corgan and Courtney Love – until the day his identity was revealed through a series of Disneyland Paris receipts.

Queer icon futch (sorry) Kristen Stewart plays J.T. We'll have to wait until March 19th for this movie (which I and three other people are probably anticipating) to be shown on the big screen.

2. Rocketman

The director Dexter Fletcher was at the origin of the controversy, largely mediocre Bohemian Rhapsody. Several critics complained that the movie was not as funny as its subject, Freddie Mercury. I have a lot more hope for his next movie, Rocketman, which tells the story of gay superstar Elton John. If nothing else, the trailer feels super gay – which is honestly all I'm looking for.

This film comes to make the Internet mad with anger on May 29th.

3 Wild nights with Emily

Imagine a better concept than this: Molly Shannon as an acclaimed and bibadual poet Emily Dickinson. It's beyond my wildest fantasies of gay teens in the suburbs. If you do not come to see this film that tells the story of Dickinson and his "special" friend Susan Gilbert, we are no longer friends (and yes, we were friends at the beginning of this story when you started reading this post). Coming sometime – I hope? – in 2019.

4 Little giants

In 2018 Boy cleared Perhaps he told an important story about conversion therapy and queer teens, he was way too nerdy for most of us to digest. Little giants promises to be just as significant, but without the standard schlock factor. Let's hope this movie has real teeth. It will be released in March.

This documentary-narrative hybrid is currently heading towards Sundance, and I look forward to it going elsewhere. Infiltrators tells the story of a group of undocumented immigrants who "introduce" into the for-profit detention system and work to release undocumented inmates. The main character is a gay man, adding a whole new level of complexity and terror to the movie. It is directed and produced by Alex Rivera and Cristina Ibarra, and we all pray for a wider theatrical release in 2019.

6 Mapplethorpe

Ondi Timoner realizes this biopic on the legendary queer photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Mapplethorpe was known for his portrayals of BDSM culture and hypermuscular homobadual men, as well as for his friendship with Patti Smith. Mapplethrope experienced a whole cultural war in the 80s due to the homoeroticism of his work. If you like that, I promise you that there will be further controversy when the film comes out in March this year.

7. Tell the bees

Sure, Tell the bees received incredibly poor critics at its TIFF premiere in September. But as a weird person, I'm open to any type of movie that's (1) is weird (2) with celebrities I know. This one, which stars Anna Paquin and an underground Scottish romance of the 1950s, meets both criteria. Check IMDB for its 2019 general release date.

8. A wonder film

Last year, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had promised that there would be at least two queer characters in the Marvel universe (any of them could be added, but one of them already exists). Critics think that at least one of these characters will be Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie, which Thompson once recognized on Twitter as being "bi" and "caring very little about what men think of her." ".

It's unclear when Valkryie will reappear, but we need that promise too much for it to not become real.

9 Adam

Adam is based on one of my favorite YA queer books of all time, by Ariel Schrag. In the movie, Nicholas Alexander plays a cis teenager who claims to be transgender to have a girlfriend. It's subversive, bitter and warm at the same time. Go see him at Sundance if you are lucky, or he usually goes out if you are not.

ten. Rafiki

Rafiki is supposed to be released in theaters in April, and it is long overdue. The film tells the story of two Kenyan women who fall in love with homobadual stigma and violence at home. It has been banned from the country of origin of the director, where homobaduality remains illegal. The Kenyan Prime Minister temporarily lifted the ban to be nominated for an Oscar (this was not the case, but we do not care).

Of all the films on this list, it is the one that should interest you the most. 2019 needs more stories that count by voices we hear the least. Transgender voices. The voices of homobadual people with disabilities and gay people of color.

Duh.

Every year there is so much more to offer the LGBTQ community. We just have to continue.
